Scripture: Isaiah 40:18–31
They shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31
Isaiah speaks to people who are weary, discouraged, and wondering whether God has forgotten them. “My way is hidden from the LORD,” they complain (Isaiah 40:27). Isaiah lifts their eyes to the Creator who calls the stars by name and sustains the universe. This mighty God has not forgotten his people. “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (Isaiah 40:29). Christians are not exempt from suffering, but they can face adversity through God’s sustaining power. The psalmist declares, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). God’s promise is not freedom from every difficulty, but his faithful presence within it.
Billy Graham compares faith to an eagle soaring on rising currents of air. Rather than exhausting itself by constantly flapping its wings, the eagle allows the wind to lift it. Similarly, we receive strength not merely by striving harder, but by depending more deeply upon God. Paul discovered this when the Lord assured him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Jesus invites the exhausted, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). God renews us through prayer, his Word, rest, and the encouragement of fellow believers. His strength does not always remove our burdens, but enables us to carry them faithfully.
George Matheson offers a surprising insight into Isaiah’s promise. Soaring represents the excitement of faith, running its enthusiasm, but walking without fainting reveals its enduring strength. Most days, faith is expressed through ordinary obedience: offering kindness when exhausted, forgiving when wounded, fulfilling responsibilities when discouraged, and praying when answers seem distant. When overwhelmed, we can pause, remember God’s promises, ask for his strength, and take the next faithful step. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). Faith does not say that everything is possible for us; faith says that nothing is impossible for God. Sometimes the miracle is not that our burdens disappear, but that God’s grace enables us to keep walking.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
When we grow weary, remind us of your unfailing presence and renew our strength. Teach us to depend upon your grace rather than our own abilities. Help us find rest in you and courage to take the next faithful step, trusting that you will sustain us.
Amen.
