The Peace of Forgiveness

Scripture: Luke 7:36–50

Jesus said to the woman,

Your faith has saved you; go in peace.

Luke 7:50

It is possible to know much about God and yet fail to experience the transforming power of his grace. Simon the Pharisee invited Jesus into his home but neglected the customary courtesies of hospitality—water for his feet, a welcoming kiss, and oil for his head. During the meal, a woman known for her sinful life entered, weeping at Jesus’ feet, wiping them with her hair, and anointing them with expensive perfume. Simon saw only her sinful past, but Jesus saw a heart overflowing with repentance and love. The contrast is striking: Simon possessed religious knowledge but lacked heartfelt devotion, while the woman recognized her desperate need for mercy. Her actions expressed a gratitude that words alone could never convey.

Rather than condemning Simon, Jesus gently told him a parable about two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, the other fifty. Neither could repay, yet both were freely forgiven. Which would love more? Simon correctly answered, the one forgiven more. Here lies a profound truth about God’s grace: the woman’s love was the result of forgiveness. Her tears, gratitude, and costly devotion flowed from a heart that had experienced mercy. Simon offered outward respect without genuine affection. True Christian obedience springs not merely from duty or fear but from grateful love for Christ. We do not serve to earn God’s acceptance; we serve because we have received his grace. As Ephesians 2:8 reminds us, salvation is God’s gift, received through faith.

Jesus then declares, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” These words offer more than release from past guilt; they assure the woman of reconciliation with God and the freedom of a new beginning. Her past no longer defines her future. As Romans 5:1 reminds us, being justified through faith brings peace with God through Jesus Christ. That same invitation remains open to everyone burdened by sin and shame. When Jesus calls, he invites us to receive his forgiveness, respond with grateful love, and walk in the peace that only his grace can give.

Prayer

Gracious Lord Jesus,

Thank you for your boundless mercy and forgiveness. Help us recognize our need for your grace and respond with grateful hearts. Free us from guilt, pride, and judgment, and fill us with your peace. May our love for you be reflected in faithful service and compassion toward others.

Amen.
