Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:1–13
But we have this treasure in jars of clay
to show that this all-surpassing power
is from God and not from us.
2 Corinthians 4:7
Christian servanthood begins with recognizing that the power to serve comes from God, not from ourselves. Paul compares our lives to fragile jars of clay containing a priceless treasure—the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Clay jars were ordinary, inexpensive, and easily broken, yet they could hold something immensely valuable. Likewise, God entrusts his gospel to imperfect and vulnerable people so that his power, rather than our abilities, receives the glory. Our weaknesses do not disqualify us from serving Christ; they remind us that everything we have comes from God.
Paul describes the struggles of Christian service: “hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair” (2 Corinthians 4:8). Paul experienced suffering and disappointment, yet he did not lose heart because God’s power sustained him. Jesus reminds his disciples, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Just as branches must remain connected to the vine to bear fruit, we must remain close to Christ through prayer, Scripture, and daily trust. Following Jesus also means taking up our cross (Mark 8:34). We may face difficulties, misunderstandings, or discouragement, but our strength comes from the One who sustains us through every trial.
Paul declares, “For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Corinthians 4:5). This is the heart of Christian servanthood. We are not called to draw attention to ourselves but to make Christ visible through humility, compassion, patience, and love. Jesus himself came “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). When we set aside pride and self-interest to serve others, his life shines through our weakness. We may be fragile vessels, but we carry a priceless treasure. Our calling is not to display our own strength, but to allow Christ’s power and love to shine through us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for entrusting your precious gospel to our fragile lives. Keep us humble in service and dependent upon your strength. Sustain us through difficulties, and help us reflect Christ’s compassion and love so that others may see your glory through us.
Amen.
