Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:11–19
After warning Timothy about the dangers of loving money, Paul turns his attention to what truly matters. “But you, man of God,” he writes, calling Timothy to pursue “righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness” (v.11). God’s provision extends far beyond meeting our physical needs; He provides the grace and strength to live faithfully. Eugene Peterson writes that Timothy is not merely to run away from greed but to “run hard and fast” toward Christ. The Christian life is a race that deserves our whole heart and complete devotion. Instead of chasing the false security of wealth, we are called to “fight the good fight of faith” and hold firmly to the eternal life God has given us.
Paul then reminds believers that God “richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment” (v.17). Our security is found not in uncertain riches but in the unchanging character of our generous Father. John Cassian observed that wealth itself is neither good nor evil; it becomes either according to the heart of the one who possesses it. For this reason, Paul calls those who have been blessed materially to be “rich in good works,” generous, and ready to share. God’s gifts are entrusted to us not merely for our comfort but so that we may become channels of His blessing to others.
Today, ask yourself: What am I running after? When Christ is our greatest treasure, we no longer cling to earthly possessions. Instead, we trust God’s faithful provision, hold our resources with open hands, and invest in what has eternal value. The God who provides for our every need also provides the grace to live generously and to experience “the life that is truly life” (v.19).
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Teach us to pursue You above every earthly treasure, to trust in Your unfailing provision, and to use every blessing generously for Your glory and the good of others.
