Scripture : Romans 4:13–25
Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed
and so became the father of many nations.
Romans 4:18
Abraham’s story reminds us that faith often begins where human possibilities end. God had taken Abraham outside and told him, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them… So shall your offspring be” (Genesis 15:5). Yet Abraham was nearly a hundred years old, and Sarah was well beyond childbearing age. The promise of countless descendants seemed impossible when they did not even have a child together. Nevertheless, Abraham was “fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:21). His confidence rested not in his circumstances but in God’s faithfulness. Faith does not deny reality; it trusts the God whose power reaches beyond our limitations.
Charles Spurgeon describes faith as “the cable between earth and heaven,” connecting our weakness to God’s inexhaustible strength. Abraham’s faith did not change his circumstances, but it kept him trusting the One who had made the promise. Paul tells us that Abraham “did not waver through unbelief… but was strengthened in his faith” (Romans 4:20). Faith is not a means of obtaining everything we desire; it is dependence upon the God “who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not” (v. 17). Richard Gula reminds us that Christian hope finds its ultimate foundation in Christ’s resurrection. Jesus “was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (v. 25). The empty tomb assures us that even death cannot defeat God’s purposes.
We too encounter situations beyond our control—unanswered prayers, strained relationships, illness, or uncertain futures. When hope grows faint, we can remember God’s faithfulness, bring our fears to him, and take the next faithful step. “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23). Our faith is only as strong as the One in whom it rests. Faith does not say that everything is possible for us; faith says that nothing is impossible for God. We may not know how our circumstances will unfold, but we know the God who holds our future. In Christ, hope is never without a foundation.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Strengthen our faith when hope seems impossible. Teach us to trust your promises, persevere in prayer, and take the next faithful step. Anchor our hope in your faithfulness and in the risen Christ.
Amen.
