Scripture : Deuteronomy 34:1–12
This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob… I have let you see it with your eyes,
but you will not cross over into it.
Deuteronomy 34:4
After forty years of leading Israel through the wilderness, Moses stood on Mount Nebo overlooking the Promised Land. God showed him the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, yet Moses would not enter it himself. His journey was ending, but God’s promise remained secure. Moses had witnessed extraordinary miracles, from the burning bush to the parting of the Red Sea, yet his greatest distinction was that the Lord knew him “face to face” (Deuteronomy 34:10). His life reminds us that faithfulness is measured not simply by what we accomplish, but by our relationship with God and our willingness to follow him.
Although Moses could only see the Promised Land from a distance, God’s purposes did not end with his death. Joshua, whom Moses had prepared for leadership, was “filled with the spirit of wisdom” (v. 9) and would lead the next generation into the land. God assured Joshua, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you” (Joshua 1:5). God’s promises were not buried with Moses. His work continued through others, reminding us that God’s faithfulness extends beyond any one person’s lifetime. Through Christ, God fulfills the greater promise of salvation that no human effort could accomplish.
We too may face unfinished work, unanswered prayers, or hopes we cannot fully realize. Moses teaches us that faithfulness sometimes means accepting what we cannot finish and trusting God with what comes next. Hebrews reminds us that God’s people sometimes “did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance” (Hebrews 11:13). Today, give thanks for what God has allowed you to accomplish, encourage others to continue the work, and entrust your unfinished hopes to his care. Faith does not say that everything is possible for us; faith says that nothing is impossible for God. Our part may end, but God’s purposes continue.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your faithfulness throughout our lives. Help us trust your promises, faithfully do the work you have given us, and leave our unfinished hopes in your loving care.
Amen.
