Scripture : Hebrews 1:1–14
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory
and the exact representation of his being,
sustaining all things by his powerful word.
Hebrews 1:3
Throughout history, God spoke through prophets, promises, and mighty acts. But Hebrews announces something greater: “In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:2). Jesus is not merely another messenger; he is God himself, the perfect revelation of God’s nature. Eugene Peterson compares Jesus to the impression made by an ancient seal, bearing the image and authority of its owner. Jesus bears the very stamp of God’s nature. As he declared, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Through his compassion, mercy, holiness, and love, Jesus reveals the heart of God.
Hebrews brings together two extraordinary expressions of Christ’s power. The One through whom the universe was created (John 1:3) and who sustains all things by his powerful word is also the One who “provided purification for sins” (Hebrews 1:3). The power that holds creation together is the power at work in our salvation. No sin is beyond God’s mercy when we turn to him through Christ. John assures us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us” (1 John 1:9). Having completed his saving work, Jesus “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” (Hebrews 1:3). His sitting down signifies that his sacrifice was complete. What we could never accomplish through our goodness, Christ accomplished through his death and resurrection. “It is finished,” Jesus declared from the cross (John 19:30).
When life seems uncertain, Hebrews invites us to look beyond our circumstances to the One who reigns above them. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). His power has not diminished, nor has his love changed. Today, bring your burdens to him, listen to his Word, and trust his finished work of salvation. Faith does not say that everything is possible for us; faith says that nothing is impossible for God. The One who sustains the universe is faithful to sustain us.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for showing us who you are through Jesus Christ. Help us trust in his saving grace and depend on your unfailing love and power.
Amen.
